Spider Dragon D&D Entry

· 5 min read News

I got kind of carried away with my Spider Dragon idea… so much that I even turned it into a monster for Dungeons and Dragons (v.3.5)!! Oooooohhh, I am such a nerd… If any of you play D&D, feel free to use this in your campaigns if you’d like, just don’t claim the idea as your own and if you play online, give me a mention please!

This monstrous creature has the body of an enormous spider and the neck and head of a dragon. The dragon’s head has eight spider-like eyes, fangs dripping with venom, and small appendages sprouting from where the head meets the neck.

Though more intelligent than spiders, the spider dragon behaves much like one. It hides, waiting for some prey to get caught in its web; only then does it reveal its terrifying form. Occasionally, when food is scarce, it will venture out in search of prey. But rarely will it leave the dark, swampy lands of its home. The only exception is when it spots its favorite prey: young dragons. Whether it savors the taste of dragonflesh or simply has a deep loathing for dragonkind is unknown, but if it spots a young dragon unaccompanied by an adult, it will do everything in its power to catch and devour it. The spider dragon understands common and draconic, but rarely speaks.

Combat

The spider dragon is cautious and patient. It will usually not move in for a kill until its prey is thoroughly entangled, then it incapacitates its victims with venom and hangs them, still alive, around its web. When it wishes to feed, it will ignite its entire web with its breath weapon, roasting the trapped victims alive, and then feed on the charred remains. If desperate to escape, it will also ignite its web before making its getaway.

Poison (Ex): Injury, Fortitude DC 26, initial and secondary damage 2d6 Str. The save DC is Constitution based.

Breath Weapon (Su): 80 foot line of fire three times per day, 12d10 damage, Reflex DC 24 half. Save DC is Constitution based.

Web (Ex): The spider dragon can throw a web eight times per day. This is similar to an attack with a net but has a maximum range of 50 feet, with a range increment of 10 feet, and is effective against targets of up to Huge size. The web anchors the target in place, allowing no movement.

An entangled creature can escape with a DC 20 Escape Artist check, or burst the web with a DC 24 Strength check. The web has 16 hit points and hardness 5.

The spider dragon can also create sheets of sticky webbing from 5 to 60 feet square. Approaching creatures must succeed on a DC 20 Spot check to notice a web, or they stumble into it and become trapped as though by a successful web attack. Attempts to escape or burst the webbing receive a +5 bonus if the trapped creature has something to walk on or grab while pulling free. Each 5-foot-square section has 16 hit points and hardness 5.

The spider dragon can move across its own sheet of web at its climb speed and can determine the exact location of any creature touching the web.

Any creature who was trapped by the spider dragon’s web but who successfully escapes is still covered in the sticky residue for 24 hours after unless they remove it with solvent or spend 1 hour scraping it off. This residue does not hinder movement, but will burn when exposed to its breath weapon (see below).

The spider dragon’s webbing is strangely resistant to ordinary and magical fire, which only has a 25% chance of igniting it (check each round). Fire from the spider dragon’s breath weapon however contains a special chemical that causes it to ignite immediately. Once a section of web ignites, it spreads immediately to any other webbing or residue coated creature within 10 feet. Web coated creatures between 10 and 30 feet from burning web or the breath weapon have a 50% chance of catching fire. Anything further than that is safe. The web burns for three rounds before being completely consumed, causing 3d8 fire damage each round. Splashing water on the fire does not put it out, but completely immersing oneself in water does. The spider dragon is immune to fire from its own web.

As the web burns, it produces a thick screen of smoke which lasts until 8 rounds after it has stopped burning. The smoke obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. A creature within 5 feet has concealment (20% miss chance) and creatures farther away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and attacker can’t use sight to locate target). The spider dragon uses its tremorsense to find opponents in the smoke. If the webs have already stopped burning, a moderate wind (11+ mph) disperses the smoke in 4 rounds; a strong wind (21+ mph) disperses the smoke in 1 round.

Skills: The dragon spider receives a +8 racial bonus to climb checks and can always choose to take 10 on Climb checks, even if rushed or threatened.

The dragon spider receives a +8 racial bonus on Hide and Move Silently checks when using its web. It also receives a +4 racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks against any creature of the dragon type.
