Not So Different

This was my final piece for my Intro do Art class. We were pretty much allowed to do anything we wanted for it. Leonardo Da Vinci did a drawing of a human fetus inside the mother’s womb; this is sort of based off that drawing. Also used this image as a reference: [link] A lot of people I showed this to said it kind of creeped them out. I think the reason they find it somewhat disturbing is because it looks so familiar and yet at the same time is so different, and that was kind of the point of the drawing: when we first encounter something that seems different or alien, we tend to not like the idea that it might not be so different after all. But those who take the time to consider it, and look beyond the initial feeling of strangeness can find beauty, and perhaps even kinship.

I had a lot of fun aging the paper… I experimented several times before I got the results I wanted. I used Argentine mate (MAH-tay) to stain the paper, and I think it turned out beautiful! I could have done a better job at shading just the interior of the egg, but I’m pleased with the outcome on the whole.
